How to Get Advanced RPAS Certified in Ontario

Pass the TC Advanced RPAS Written Exam

Complete the Practical Flight Review
Your reviewer will assess your flying skills against TC standards — pre-flight inspection, controlled hovering, maneuvers, emergency procedures, and situational awareness. The review takes approximately 45–60 minutes at your chosen flying site.

Receive Your Advanced RPAS Endorsement
On passing, your TC Pilot Certificate is endorsed for Advanced RPAS operations. You're now legally certified to fly in controlled airspace, over bystanders, and for commercial operations anywhere in Canada.

What You Need for Your Ontario Flight Review

✅ TC Pilot Certificate
You must have passed your TC Advanced RPAS written exam and hold a valid Pilot Certificate before booking your practical review.
🚁 Registered Drone (250g+)
Your drone must be registered with Transport Canada and marked with your registration number. Must be airworthy and fully charged on review day.
🪪 Valid Government ID
Bring valid ID and your TC Pilot Certificate number. Your reviewer verifies your certification status before the review begins.
📋 Logbook (Recommended)
Not mandatory but strongly recommended. A logbook demonstrating recent flight hours gives your reviewer confidence in your experience level.
🌤️ Suitable Weather
Your review requires suitable flying conditions. Wind under 25 km/h, no precipitation, good visibility. We'll reschedule at no charge if weather is unsuitable.
📍 Flying Site
You need access to a legal flying site. We can help you identify suitable locations in your GTA area if needed — parks, open fields, or private property.

What is the difference between Basic and Advanced RPAS in Canada? +
Basic RPAS allows you to fly in uncontrolled airspace only, away from bystanders. Advanced RPAS gives you the ability to fly in controlled airspace (near airports with authorization), over bystanders, and for most commercial operations in urban areas like the GTA. Advanced requires a practical flight review with a TC Certified reviewer — Basic does not.
How long is an Advanced RPAS practical flight review in Ontario? +
The practical review itself takes 45–60 minutes. Budget about 90 minutes total including pre-flight setup and debrief. If you add our optional 45-min prep session (P2 package), allow 2 hours 15 minutes total.
Is Advanced RPAS certification valid across all of Canada? +
Yes. Your TC Advanced RPAS endorsement is issued by Transport Canada and is valid for commercial and recreational operations anywhere in Canada. It is not province-specific — an Ontario reviewer's endorsement is valid in BC, Alberta, Quebec, and all other provinces and territories.
Do I need Advanced RPAS certification for real estate drone photography in Toronto? +
In most cases, yes. Toronto and GTA urban environments involve controlled airspace, proximity to bystanders, and complex airspace that Basic RPAS does not cover. Most professional real estate photographers operating drones in the GTA need Advanced RPAS certification to do so legally.
How much does an Advanced RPAS flight review cost in Ontario? +
